Welcome to Monte's Ride to Defeat ALS. We'll be riding from Fort Collins, Colorado to Iowa City, Iowa to raise money for ALS research and help families living with the disease. Our ride will follow the route of a bike tour that Monte took our family on in the summer of 1979. This blog will chart our preparations and progress, and let readers know how they can get involved!

Photos from the 1979 bike trip

This week, I went back to my dad's slides from our 1979 adventure and scanned a few of my favorites--especially pictures of Monte, but of my mom, brother Shannon and me as well.  The closer we get to our Monte's Ride departure, the more memories from that original trip come bubbling up for me.  For a 13-year-old, that 1300-mile ride was such an amazing experience! Hopefully these pics will give you a little of the flavor of that ride....

Here's my dad on the morning of our departure, June 1979.

And our family in the driveway of our home, getting ready to hit the road...

I love this photo of my mom and brother, cruising the wide open roads of Nebraska...

The Nebraska-Iowa border, close to the halfway point of our ride...

One of my all-time favorite photos, taken in the last days of our ride.  Little did you know that Nirvana is not just an existential state, but also a small town in Michigan...

And here's me (right) with my dad's little brother, Uncle Kelley (left), who joined us for the Michigan leg of our adventure...
