Welcome to Monte's Ride to Defeat ALS. We'll be riding from Fort Collins, Colorado to Iowa City, Iowa to raise money for ALS research and help families living with the disease. Our ride will follow the route of a bike tour that Monte took our family on in the summer of 1979. This blog will chart our preparations and progress, and let readers know how they can get involved!

Day Three: Sterling to Julesburg, Co

We got a late start out of Sterling after a big breakfast at the J&L Cafe. The first 10 miles were beautiful with sunny skies and we averaged 14mph. Then the sky clouded up and the wind began.

The route was 61 miles but we added five in search of lunch in Crook. By then it was 3pm and the wind was gusting harder. And harder. And harder.

To give you an idea of how exhausting riding into a stiff wind can be, here's a picture of Kieran at the start of the day and another at mile 45 in Sedgwick:

At dusk it began to drizzle--more like a severe mist--but we pushed on, arriving in town at 8:15 pm. We got the last room at the Holiday Motel and promptly collapsed.
